The Chair by Nixon Mateulah

you’ve sat long
on that chair
so long that it’s rickety
and the floor is uneven -
a sedentary shirker!
why?
can’t you repair it
and your son sit instead
and his sister help scrub the floor -
flat and smooth
while you retire to your villa
with dignity
will you?
say yes or yelp dad!
your own child’s asking politely
with lips of a sheep
hands of a bee
a child that looks like you
but acts like Mandela
will you?
stand up and leave the chair
whose wood is ebony
good for monkey’s buttocks
but I will cushion it
how?
stand there and see
how skilful
my hands could be
sure!
isn’t so attractive
and comfortable now?
oooyes! let me
sit on it once more
before clouds shut up on
me
no! it’s my chair now
yes, it’s all yours.
