Storymoja Blog – Your Brand

November 24th, 2009  |  Published in News, Reading  |  2 Comments

Writing is a form of personal freedom. It frees us from the mass identity we see all around us. In the end, writers will write not to be outlaw heroes of some underculture but mainly to save themselves, to survive as individuals.
(Don DeLillo)

Link your writing to the brand you want it to have.

Link your writing to the brand you want it to have.

That said, I concede that each one of us has his or her own purpose in writing every single piece of work they produce. Be it income, redemption, exploration and discovery, entertainment, enlightenment, or whatever the purpose your writing serves, it is something you hold dear and proud. If not, I doubt that you would be here reading this. Since writing pretty much defines us, it then follows that our writing is our own very personal brand.

Brand: a characteristic or distinctive kind.

Brand Name: an arbitrarily adopted name that is given by a manufacturer or merchant to an article or service to distinguish it as produced or sold by that manufacturer or merchant and that may be used and protected as a trademark, one having a well-known and usually highly regarded or marketable name.

Seeing that your writing is not just a hobby, but a profession and career that you value and respect (even hobbies and side careers deserves respect ) then it makes sense for you, the writer, to develop and protect your brand, your distinct writing, and your brand name, the name under which you produce your work.

Think about it, were you to begin producing a product say, cosmetics, what kind of efforts will you put into it? You would no doubt have premises, the location that would serve as your point of manufacture, a registered business, a registered trade name and so on. You would go into product research, market research and the like. You will protect the trade/brand name by making certain that your product never comes into negative light by being sub-standard, or just plain bad. Once you have your product, you would market it aggresively, keep records of all sales, and maintain proper accounts.

Do you have any more ideas with regards to this topic that you would like to share with us? Storymoja will reward one reader every month, for your participation in our Writer’s Blog. All you have to is either send us a piece of your work or comment on and rate the posts.

And now to this week’s reading:

We begin with neighbourhood scandals and intrigues. The Sound of a Crash by Fidel Ongollah.
Then we need to find out about that letter! The Letter  by Sandra A. Mushi

And what is going on with Sally? Surly Sally by Denis Kabi

And what do we have here? A submission that did not come with the author’s name. If this is your story, please send me the original copy in the body of email, with your name and details so I can record your copyright. The Reporter.

Last, but not least is a piece that is not quite a story, but still is a story about the world of poets, poetry and poetics. Poetry, ressurected, alive but dying soon by Dennis Mosiere.
Thank you very much for sharing your work, and for commenting on other writers’ pieces. Please continue sending your ideas about how to make your weekly reading more fun to blogs@storymojaafrica.co.ke. And remember, all stories published on the Storymoja Blog will be eligible for the Crown of Story of the Week. The stories are posted every Monday. Please critique and vote for the story you believe should wear the crown. At the end of the week, the votes will be tallied and the story with the most votes will posted on the Storymoja Website as the Story of the Week on the Friday of the same week. To have your story in this weekly process please send it to blogs@storymojaafrica.co.ke before Friday at 4pm.

Have a wonderful and creative week!
