Swedish project to connect with Kenyan women writers

The editors of the Swedish literary journal 00TAL (pronounced “null-null-tahl”), Madeleine Grieve and Kristina Sigunsdotter, will be in Kenya for the first two weeks of December. Joining them will be Henrik Enbohm of the Swedish Writers Union. Their trip is sponsored by the Swedish Institute’s Creative Force project – more info here:

Their goal is to “make new connections, promote contemporary East African female writers, and work for the development of children and young adults’ interest in, and access to, reading and writing.

They are particularly interested in meeting new Kenyan and East African women writers who have not been published, or received exposure outside Kenya.
Or who have faced challenges – economic, political, institutional, societal, as women writing; or barriers of class, gender, sexuality, in getting their work out. They want to read the greatest possible diversity of writing, both published and unpublished, by Kenyan women, of every generation.

00TAL plans to bring out a special issue next year showcasing Kenyan women poets and writers, presenting their work in both Swedish and English.

Please let them know directly of events, writing groups, creative networks you are a part of, and set up meetings to share what you are doing with them. And spread the word to all the writing women you know!
