Men Under Attack!

The transition from a traditional society to an urban society has had a tremendous impact on the role of Kenyan men. Previously assigned gender roles are being rendered obsolete by the urban space. A new wave of female empowerment has brought about increased pressure for new definitions of masculinity for the men in their lives. The contemporary man’s new function is increasingly defined by female idealism. Men are constantly chastised for not living up the female expectation.
However, they are several men who contest this viewpoint and the notion of male emasculation as a result of female financial leverage. While what women want is widely advertised, very little is ever heard of what men want in a relationship beyond the touted negative stereotypes around sex? For this reason, we are determined to establish what real men have to say about the following?
–>What does it mean to be ‘good man’ in this new construct? Is there life beyond fatherhood and security roles for a man? What does fatherhood entail in the modern set up?
–>What are our new rites of passages? Who are our new mentors? Where are the vital lessons of masculinity drawn from?
–>How are Kenyan men straddling their traditional and modern roles? What good values of the old should we retain? Which ones should we discard?
–>What are the new perceptions on sex? Is promiscuity coded in the DNA?
Join us for a candid conversation on the future manhood in contemporary Kenyan society. The discussion will be moderated by Saturday Nation Mantalk columnist, Oyunga Pala.
