Kingwa Kamencu - Author of 'To grasp at a star'

Kingwa Kamencu is an award winning Kenyan writer and author of ‘To Grasp at a Star’. She writes widely in different genres. She was nominated a Rhodes Scholar early this year and joins Oxford University in September to pursue an MSc. in African Studies. She has been ghost writing KENWA head Asunta Wagura’s autobiography which will be published later in the year.

Kingwa will be participating in the following sessions at the Storymoja Hay Festival 2009

Saturday 1st August 2009, 4pm – 5:30pm: A conversation with Asunta Wagura w/ Kingwa Kamencu

ASUNTA WANGURA: WRITING HER LIFE

If you were HIV-positive, would you go ahead and have a child? Asunta Wangura did and told the world about it in her Nation newspaper column that inspires thousands. Come listen to her amazing story of how she has dealt with the harrowing stigma of living with HIV. A leading health activist, Ms. Wangura is the founder and director of one of the oldest HIV advocacy groups in Kenya, KENWA. She will be interviewed by Kingwa Kamencu, author of “To Grasp a Star” and soon-to-be Rhodes Scholar.

Saturday 1st August 2009, 10am – 11:30 am PEN KENYA: A discussion on Prison stories/freedom of expression with Onduko Bw’Atebe.

PEN Kenya invites you to come meet people who have been arrested as a result of expressing themselves. They will each give a 5min talk of what freedom of expression means to them. Join the discussion about the history, the major infringements, and positive developments.  Explore the role of writers, media, government and general citizens in securing and promoting the freedom of expression.
