Dr. Obama of Care International, Dr. Kiwali of UNEP and Nyokabi of Marketing Strategies & Solutions flag off the walk.
It is 7am at the Nairobi Safari Walk. There are already dozens of women milling about. Before 7.30 am there will be 300+ women here. The atmosphere is charged with excitement as Mentors and Mentees alike register and wait for the briefing before the Walk begins.
The Walk is the Nairobi Version of the Women Mentoring Women Walk which is happening on the 29th of November, 2008 in 6 countries. Five young ladies who are participating in the Walk as Mentees (young women looking for advice and encouragement from older successful role models) share their feelings with a Storymoja writer:
“I am excited and psyched about this walk.” Sharon Mbugua of the United States International University Alumni Association said.
Wanja Getambu and Shana Katuga explained that they were looking at the Walk as an opportunity to interact and network with different women.
Janet Mbugua, popular newsanchor with KTN, said that the walk was a big deal for her, because she wanted to get to know and talk to women who had been there before her, so that she can most effectively chart her career path.
The Mentors were likewise energetic and ewxcited to be part of the Walk, and the ensuing relationships. Jane Wanza and Joyce Kamau were all set and happy to flash their brightest smiles as they were photographed just before the walk begun. Also present for the Walk as mentors were Ivy Mwai, poetess Betty Wamalwa, UNEP Chief of Gender Mainstreaming Dr. Kiwali, Dr. Obama of Care International, who also happens to be USA’s President –elect Barack Obama’s sister.
The Walk was organized by Marketing Solutions & Strategies and Storymoja as logistics partners, with kind sponsoring from the Kenya Wildlife Services, Coca Cola Bottlers, Adelphi Leather, Nestle and Henkel Limited.
