The Storymoja Writer’s Blog

Last night I listened to an extremely talented person play the Piano at the Exchange Bar at The Sarova Stanley Hotel. He teased and entertained, mocked and flirted with those who cared to listen to his music. He borrowed compositions from Mozart and Handel, to Fadhili Williams, Miriam Makeba and Siti Binti Saad, then superimposed them all to make his own music.

I know I will go back and risk a lot of money for a drink just so I can listen to the pianist play again.

He got me thinking. What makes us? Is it what we are made, or what we make of ourselves? What makes our culture? Are the traditions all original compositions or are they a mixture of this and that superimposed on each other to make our culture? Do we bind ourselves to lost traditions as our culture, or do we take what we have and compose whole new pieces of musical life?

On that note, Storymoja is proud to present a forum for Women to compose new music for their lives. The Women Mentoring Women Walk will be on November 29th at the KWS Safari Walk from 7am. For more details you can contact Millie Dok at millie@storymojaafrica.co.ke

And now to our Tuesday reading.

Boniface Gachugu takes us into the Nairobi Night at 9am. Brace yourself for incredible descriptions that you will very definitely recognize.

David Mbuthia takes through the War in his mind and the challenges of being an outcast courtesy of mental illness.

Kariuki Karanga has gone off and dared talk about Women and their weaknesses. How dare he hide behind the Elders of the Burning Spear as he attacks women? I await the responses from those of the womenfolk who dare disagree with him.

Mike Kwambo has gone off on a wooing mission. Good Luck to him with Nyako
