Last night I listened to an extremely talented person play the Piano at the Exchange Bar at The Sarova Stanley Hotel. He teased and entertained, mocked and flirted with those who cared to listen to his music. He borrowed compositions from Mozart and Handel, to Fadhili Williams, Miriam Makeba and Siti Binti Saad, then superimposed them all to make his own music. I know I will go back and risk a lot of money for a drink just so I can listen to the pianist play again. He got me thinking. What makes us? Is it what we are made, or what we make of ourselves? What makes our culture? Are the traditions all original compositions or are they a mixture of this and that superimposed on each other to make our culture? Do we bind ourselves to lost traditions
